About Department

The Department Microbiology was established in the year 2004. Now, it has grown as a full-fledged Research centre with expertise in numerous aspects of biology. Research within the department is focused on Environmental Microbiology, Biodegradation, Medical Microbiology, Bioactive Phytochemicals and Biofuels. The department has excellent infrastructure with the basic and advanced equipment for research. Curriculum is designed to meet the need of the student’s community. In addition to various teaching programmes, the faculty of the department contribute extensively to research in modern areas of Microbiology. The department has completed a major project, sponsored by the DST for 13.5 lakhs. The department also is supported by the Tamilnadu State council for Science and technology under popularization of science activities scheme. Our department is one among the four departments in the college, recognized and supported under DBT Star college scheme. The department offers Industry oriented Value added programmes, periodical skill oriented workshops and training programmes. Tie up with diagnostic laboratories for placements. A Diploma programme in Clinical Laboratory Techniques Linkages with Research laboratories for career enhancements Certifications in fostoc.

Programme Description

Our B.Sc., Microbiology course involves the study of microorganisms with specialized core paper including Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology, Genetics, Food Microbiology etc., As a microbiologists, it is necessary to do the research required for the future challenges of disease worldwide. Our practical's has a main focus to do so. The final year as a part of curriculum will spend on the mini project to overcome a specific scientific concern.

  • To incorporate outcome based curriculum to cater the needs of students by practicing innovative teaching methodologies both in theory and practical through which can recognize the creative young minds, their strength and ability to work together to reach their fullest potential.

The exceptional programmes backed by skilful teaching and practical classes along with industry interface has been the confidence boosters to pursue a career in research. The support and motivation of the enthusiastic faculty members of Microbiology and Biotechnology Department, was a learning-oriented journey. The practical approach and dissertation knowledge that I gained by taking over 6 months of active research work during the M. Sc., programme has provided me with real time and hands on skills required for a career in research. The friendly attitude of the Professors and their willingness to always offer a helping hand has made me feel a part of the HICAS family. The tenure spent here was splendid and has helped my growth in both professional and personal life. I am really grateful and proud to be a part of this institution as alumni, for the experiences that have graced my life.
